Ways to Paint for Wood

Ways to paint wood doors, wood furniture, wood floors, wood cabinets & more!

Staining

Staining gives the wood surface a transparent colour and makes it more luxurious and elegant-looking. Staining is best applied in cool environments because you don’t want any heat to dry up the stain too quickly before you have a chance to even out the surface. Staining will make the timber look a tad darker & smokier but smarter.

Wax Resist

This painting technique requires you to apply a thin coat of wax onto the painted timber surface before another coat of contrasting paint is painted over the waxed layer. The wax will create a form of resistance to the final coat of water-based emulsion paint as they do not mix. The topcoat of paint will end up either in droplets or run off, creating an interesting texture when dried. Once the paint is dry, rub with a piece of soft cloth.

Liming or Pickling

Liming or pickling works on bare wood with open grains and knots. Use a brush to apply a coat of liming or pickling paste or wax onto the bare wood surface. Wipe off this coat of wax or paste with a clean dry cloth; the effect will be washed-out alike natural beachside appearance. This form of wood decorating technique is best applied on open-grained woods such as ash or oak. A close-grained wood such as pine or birch will require brushes that are stiffer such as a wire brush.

Tips on Painting Wood:

If the existing condition of your painted wood is flaky, rough, blistered or multi-layered, stripping the surface down to bare wood is the way to go. Otherwise, any new coating of paint will not be able to adhere to the wood well. The painters may use wire brush, shave hook or hot-air gun to remove the paint. This is normally followed by applying a coat of primer and wood filler before sanding to a smooth finish, before applying the wood primer sealer.

For smaller and intricate areas such as window frames, door frames and architraves, painting will be done with brushes, applying in the direction of the wood grains.
